Matoush Inc. is a family business established in the early 90s; my father John was the founder of John Matoush & Sons, a Sub-Contractor/Construction Company. Four of his sons continued working and studying in the field of construction; throughout the years one managed to obtain his Journeyman Carpentry Certification and another became a Master Electrician. Back in 2010, I obtained my Construction Engineering Technician Diploma from Algonquin College. In 2013, the Eeyou Economic Group/CFDC Inc. held a recognition ceremony and awarded our company the “Service Industry Award” for the Cree Nation Territory. It was an honour to be invited as a guest speaker in numerous events and conferences held within our region such as Regional Career fairs hosted by Apatisiiwin Skills Development, and “The Launching Guidelines in Partnerships Agreement” event held by The Cree Nation Abitibi-Temiscamingue Economic Alliance; where it was an opportunity to share my experience in the industry. I was also recently invited to speak about Partnerships for the Société du Plan Nord that was scheduled for April 2020. I’ve lead negotiations with a mining company in 2016 worth almost $10 million dollars of construction projects within the Cree Nation.
Our mission is the help the communities to be more self-sufficient by hiring the locals and delivering training onsite. We accomplished in collaboration with Cree School Board, CCQ (la Commission de la construction du Québec), Le centre Polymétier de Rouyn-Noranda and the Cree Nation Government in starting a construction electricity program in 2014. In 2017,7 Crees from Mistissini obtained their DEP (Diploma of vocational studies). The obstacles we are facing in todays industry is the lack of Cree specialized tradesmen in the territory. In most cases non-native companies are less interested in hiring local, which is why we’re more committed in certifying them. Blais Industries Inc. based in Rouyn-Noranda; Quebec joined with Matoush Inc to form EenouWorks Inc. Blais offers specialized services such as: electrical, plumbing, mechanical, ventilation and many other trades. Our objective is to find the right partners that have similar goals, so we can increase employment and knowledge in the communities.

With a peak of 40 workers, our mandate was to realize electrical (power and control), telecomunication, fire alarm and access control. We achived our goal due to a qualified manpower and a strict respect of the projet schedule.
In 2013, Matoush Inc. submitted a proposal to the Cree School Board for a Construction Electricity program to be initiated in the Cree Nation.
This would allow more Cree Certified Technicians in the construction industry.
In partnership with the Cree School Board, CCQ, Apatisiwiin Skills Development and Centre Polymetier majority of students graduated the DEP currently working as electricians.
